M*A*S*S

By The Revd Rosemary Donovan

Moseley After School Service (M*A*S*S) has celebrated its first birthday this term. The opportunity for children and parents to worship together without the pressures of other competing family or sporting activities on a Sunday is proving to be very popular. M*A*S*S follows a distinctive liturgical format with a greeting and opening prayer, songs and sharing of the Word alongside a relaxed informal atmosphere where eating jam sandwiches goes side by side with producing a collage or another creative activity. The children own the service by ringing the bell, lighting the candles and often one of them reads the story.

This term we have welcomed several new members and enjoyed fame with the local community in Birmingham 13. The theme of I Jigsaw was an unusual title but we explored how different aspects of church life slot together. In particular we took our service out into the community and shared together with the residents of Wilson Lodge. The children also wrote postcards to children in a Sunday school in the Bahamas. We have also been looking at the stories of several animals in the Bible and preparing to share our work at the crib service at St. Anne’s on 23 December.

M*A*S*S is a really great example of how traditional church has to change and adapt for this generation, call it a fresh expression if you like, tell all your friends and come and join us for worship when we start again on Thursday 17 January at 4:00 p.m.
