May Peace Prevail on Earth

By Craig Donovan

You’ll have no doubt heard appeals for the Moseley Peace Garden, whether for plants, benches, a birdbath or even the Peace Pole, but you’d be forgiven for wondering what it’s all about. The inspiration came from Holland House (near Evesham) where Rosemary first came across a Peace Pole and then she discovered another in Iona.

There are more than 200,000 Peace Poles around the world. They are in simple places, such as churches and gardens, and extraordinary ones, such as at the Pyramids of El Giza, Egypt or the Magnetic North Pole in Canada. They are promoting healing of conflict in places like Sarajevo and the Allenby Bridge between Israel and Jordan. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualise and pray for world peace.

There is an unused area behind the Parish Hall at St Anne’s which is now in the process of being transformed into Moseley’s own Peace Garden, with pride of place going to the Peace Pole. It displays the prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English, Arabic, Hebrew and Japanese. M*A*S*S has created a wonderful mosaic, YG have cleared the beds, members of the congregation have planted the pots and Moseley in Bloom have offered plenty of help and advice. It’s been a real community effort! By the time we gather for the opening ceremony (at the Village Garden Party) the area will have been transformed into a place of beauty and calm.

Thanks must go to the very many helpers and contributors, and I’d encourage everyone to find a few moments to take a look and make their own prayer for peace in our community, and in the world.
