Family Zone

By Debbie Barwell

I have recently taken over from Lis Sparrow as the chairperson of the Children’s Sub-Committee. Lis is a tough act to follow, having worked tirelessly in the interests of the children and young people of our church for a considerable number of years. The Sub-Committee is indebted to her for all that she has done. By way of introduction, for those who do not know me, I am a choir mum (Katherine and Rachel) and work as a teaching assistant at a Catholic primary school in Moseley.

On behalf of the Sub-Committee, I would like to introduce an exciting new venture for St Mary’s. We intend to create a Family Zone in church, where families with young children can sit together and be more involved in 10:00 a.m. services when there are no children’s groups taking place. As a trial exercise we would like to set up two temporary zones — one in the North Aisle and one in the South Aisle. Both zones would be close to the front of the church to allow young children to see what is happening throughout the service. Having experienced both temporary zones, families could then advise the Sub-Committee whether or not the scheme is beneficial and, if so, which location is the more appropriate. These two zones would only be in place for a trial period from Sunday 22 July until Harvest Festival 2008.

Members of the Sub-Committee would join families in these temporary zones to listen to their views and cards would also be made available for written comments. We also intend to create a photographic display in each area to show how other churches cater for families and thereby stimulate discussion about our own provision. Naturally, the Sub-Committee would welcome the views of the wider congregation throughout the trial period. The outcome of the trial would be reported back to PCC at the earliest opportunity. I look forward to hearing your views.
