Anawim is a charity that helps women in prostitution and runs a women’s centre in Birmingham. It also supports women in and out of prison. The Anawim Project works with women across Birmingham, including women in and around prostitution, drug addictions and domestic violence (as all are vulnerable to prostitution). It reaches out in friendship to all women who are trapped in prostitution, and offers support and counselling to those expressing a wish to leave the lifestyle. It also offers courses and activities in anything from art and craftwork, literacy and numeracy, mentoring courses, ICT, self-defence and life skills.
The women receive one to one support on the full range of issues which affect them; housing, benefits, domestic violence, CV writing, accompanying them to appointments, attending court and social services case conferences.
At the Anawim centre women can come and just chill out, taking a break from their often-chaotic lives, receiving encouragement and hope. They often take away with them clothes, food and toiletries all donated by our generous supporters, mainly church and women’s groups. There is also a crèche facility, which is extremely well equipped, and a fully qualified worker puts on fun activities for the children while the mothers take part in the activities and courses. During school holidays she organises trips out to places like Weston and Drayton Manor that we all enjoy together. These trips are great times of bonding and getting to know each other better.
Anawim provides food, clothes and toiletries for those in need. Courses and activities plus an OFSTED registered crèche are provided for the women and their children. Out of school activities include trips and holidays. Their partner organisation is the SAFE project which runs a methadone programme on the premises.
Opening hours are: Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
