The Peace Garden is a Winner!

By Craig Donovan

Last year, when Rose and I attended the Moseley in Bloom Awards Evening, it was strictly as spectators, offering our support to the people and organisations that had worked so hard to brighten up our community. This time it was different.

Members of YG, M*A*S*S and our two congregations had this year pulled on their collective wellies and entered into the fray, creating the Peace Garden behind the Parish Hall. What was previously little more than weeds was transformed with a pond, new beds, benches and a Peace Pole. It looked fantastic, offered a place of contemplation to the neighbourhood and was a genuine community effort. Could we be in with a chance of stealing St Columba’s crown of Most Flourishing Faith Community?

It was always going to be a big ask. St Anne’s, tucked away on Park Hill, wasn’t on the official judging route and St Columba had worked just as hard creating a blooming display right on the Parade. Still we held our breath as we stood in the Fighting Cocks waiting for the winner to be announced. St Columba, the bookies favourite, did indeed retain their crown but we did receive a Special Mention Award, not bad for our first proper effort. Plans are already underway for next year.
