Christmas Day Together 2008

By Janet Thorne

It is difficult to believe that it is only a very short time before the arrival of the most eagerly anticipated day of the year. I wonder what you will be doing on that day? I hope that it will be good for everyone.

The benefice will once again be hosting Christmas Day Together at the Parish Hall at St Anne’s. This is a community event where all are welcome to attend. Everyone will receive a warm welcome, plenty of good food, wine, cups of tea, fun and friendship! There is no specific criteria for attendance only a desire to meet with and enjoy the company of others on this special day.

In previous years Jeremy has served the dinners, Peter has played the piano for carol singing, Rosemary has arranged the game of bingo and distributed the presents and Craig has been the quizmaster! But they have also chatted and listened and joined in the fun making everyone feel wanted and special.

Many members of St Anne’s and St Mary’s congregations have also been there. Preparing vegetables, decorating, serving dinners, distributing cups of tea and providing transport .Thanks to Birmingham 13 and Craig’s advert, many others have offered their services, and the whole event has become owned by the wider community. The event has cost between £700-£750 to host, depending on numbers and cost of living at the time!

In previous years the friends of Christmas Day Together have held social lunches to help fund this event, but this has not been possible this year. However there will be a Coffee Morning by kind invitation of Fred and Pat Burrows at 17, Hayfield Road, specifically to raise funds for this event. This will be on 6 December 2008 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Entrance will be £1 and this will include coffee. There will also be a grand Christmas raffle (raffle prizes gratefully received), so if you cannot come then perhaps you could purchase a ticket? This is your opportunity to be part of this event and to help raise the funds necessary to make an extraordinary day for all who attend.
