Prayer Zone at St Mary’s

By The Revd Jeremy Dussek

Following the successful experiment of the Family zones in the North and South Aisles at St Mary’s, the PCC for St Mary’s has endorsed the request from the Children’s Subcommittee to continue with the experiment. An 18 month licence is being sought from the Archdeacon. This will allow us to develop these areas before having to apply for a formal faculty enabling the zones to possibly become permanent.

Meanwhile in the Lady Chapel, plans are underway to create an area for quiet reflection and silent prayer. Following a funeral in February, the Church was given a generous donation and the Churchwardens have agreed for this to be spent on two candle stands to allow anyone to light a candle whilst praying.

Many Churches and Cathedrals have created such spaces and it is good that this will now be able to happen at St Mary’s. The area will be visible from the main door and will be contained in a chained off zone ensuring safety to be maintained. We ask that children are supervised by an adult at all times, if they are in this area. Anyone will be free to come and pray and also leave requests which will be offered up in worship during the week; for only remain lit whilst someone is in the building. Please do come and use this space and enjoy the beauty of this area of the Church.

In Advent we will be also asking people to bring their hopes and prayers to God. These will be hung on a prayer tree as part of the Moseley Christmas Tree Festival. Come, be still and let the light of Christ shine in your heart this day.
