It’s two years now since we moved from Birmingham to the village of Gladestry in Powys. Just a couple of miles into Wales, the journey from Birmingham took us under two hours, but changed our way of life considerably. Why did we move? Well, we both decided that for a few years at least it would be nice to sample a quieter, less hurried way of life that was hard to achieve in Birmingham. Two years on — have we found it? Well — sometimes, yes — less noise, certainly, even though the dawn chorus is as loud here as WMPTE’s diesels, - and an acre of land has to be tended constantly.
Though Kington is just a short drive away, there’s no more popping round the corner to the High Street at the last moment for the things you think you need. Balti withdrawal set in quite early, but fixes can be obtained on return visits to the triangle. Friends from St Mary’s who have visited will know that our village is set in the most beautiful countryside. Opening our front door on a clear morning and looking at Hergest Ridge it’s hard to imagine being in a more beautiful place.
In the summer months our home becomes a B & B catering for many people some walking Offa’s Dyke path - the trail that runs along the English/Welsh borders from Chepstow in the south to Prestatyn in the north — some who fancy the fine food available in the Michelin starred restaurants and pubs, and some who just want to use us as a base to explore Wales’ green and pleasant land . Winter months so far have found us busy decorating and rebuilding — and wrapping up warm. We keep in touch with all the intrigues of Moseley life via family and friends and the Birmingham Post. So, Big Brother and Sister are watching You. Beware!
You all know where we are. If you don’t, take a look at our Website: www.offas-dyke-lodge.co.uk. Give us a ring on 01544 370341 if you fancy visiting for a couple of nights.
Best Wishes and Hwyl Fawr
