News and Information

APRIL 2010

Hi All,

Welcome to a new term in the ever busy life of St. Mary’s Music! There’s a lot happening this term so please do keep an eye on the calendar (left) and refer to it frequently.

  • There are a number of Saturday weddings for the Robed Choir
  • There are a number of special events for both Choirs
  • There are events out of Birmingham
  • There is an altered pattern within St. Mary’s: Note that from May the Robed Choir take over the First Sunday Evensong and the Singers take over the Third Sunday Evensong. The schedule on the left takes this into account.

All these things need everyone to keep abreast of things and to maintain an active diary!

So, what’s special?

For Robed Choir:

  1. Sunday 18th April 10.00am: Jeremy visited practice and asked for Trebles to lead the prayers and readings at our Teaching Eucharist. We’re looking forward to your participation.
  2. April 30th: Closing date for receiving deposits (£30 per head) for our summer residential. It’s VERY embarrassing for all if we have to chase these up - please keep to the deadline, thanks! Any problems, do let us know rather than keeping heads down - we can try to help if you keep us in the loop.
  3. Saturday 15th May: two weddings for Trebles: at 11.00am and 2.30pm. It’s the most important day of the youg couples’ lives and it’s a privilege for us to be asked to share it - do come in force to make it special.
  4. Saturday 29th May: Adam Rodgers, a former Treble, gets married at Edgbaston Old Church and would love his old choir to sing for the event. Full Choir for this one - time? 1.00pm (Rehearse 12.15pm)
  5. Saturday 12th June: Evensong at Derby Cathedral - again, a full turnout needed to maintain our standing with the Cathedral. We have a good reputation there, hence our invitation to return.
  6. Wednesday 11th - Sunday 15th August: Summer Residential at Salisbury Cathedral / Romsey Abbey.

For Singers:

  1. Thursday 13th May: Ascension Day. Eucharist at 8.00pm. Rehearse at 7.15pm.
  2. Thursday 27th May 7.30pm: Singing for a special Anniversary Mass at St. Augustine’s RC Church, Solihull. Provisional rehearsal: 6.30pm
  3. Wednesday xx (to be confirmed) July: Final Service of the Diocesan 3D Course at Birmingham Cathedral.

For Both Choirs together:

  1. Saturday 22nd May: Family Games Evening at the clubhouse of Holders Lane Allotments. Pool, darts, machines and … A skittle alley so a competition will run! A Bar will operate and for those so inclined you’ll be able to wander through the allotments. Bring and Share food but there may well be a top-up of £3.00 (adults) with, we anticipate, children free. This’ll be a lovely opportunity for everyone to mix and mingle in a convivial social atmosphere. Watch out for further details in Chimes and through leaflets, but do note the date.
  2. Sunday 23rd May: Joint Choirs sing for Pentecost 10.00am Service (Rehearse 9.15am)
  3. Saturday 19th June: Parish Barbecue in the Vicarage garden, organised by the Friends of the Choirs. Another occasion to join together for a non-singing, social event which should be a treat for families and individuals alike.
  4. Saturday 10th July 7.30pm: Joint Choirs’ Summer Concert for the Moseley Festival. Warm up 6.30pm.
  5. Sunday 8th August: An Amazing Invitation! To sing for the closing service of the Llandaff Cathedral Flower Festival. This will be a day trip out by coach. Attendance at the service is by invitation to special groups around the Llandaff diocese and they expect a capacity congregation to attend. We will have to be on our very best form that day. Needless to say - full turnout!

I expect that there will be more information in due course - please put these commitments into diaries and maintain them as priorities. Many thanks indeed!

Best,

Mick
