Thought for the week by Jennifer Holloway

Straight to the point

Have you ever watched Countdown? You have to make words using the letters given. Try finding words for these letters – SLTNIE. Work them out as you read on.

Today, we hear how Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan by John. John had already acknowledged to his followers that someone much greater than himself was to come. John could baptize with water, and this would grant forgiveness of sin to those who truly repented but the one to follow would baptize with the Holy Spirit. When Jesus had been baptized, he rose from the water, the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descended.

The dove has become symbolic of the peace that only can come with true belief and action. It doesn’t guarantee a life of ease. The next recorded event in Mark 1 tells of the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, having time to be silent and patient and then resist the temptations that he met. Our own lives may follow a pattern of hardships or of relative lack of burden, usually a mix of both. Baptism can give a stable basis for whatever is mapped out for our lives.

Except in emergencies, most baptism services are those of joy, with families and friends coming together and perhaps followed by tinsel and a party. Great! Such occasions are happy celebrations. But we should never forget what the act of baptism is really about. It’s commitment made by someone, or by parents and godparents for babies and children, that will give the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. Amongst the TINSEL there should be time to LISTEN and be SILENT. Time to reflect on what God wants from us in return.

Baptism of Christ

Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit: grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit, that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
