Thought for the week by Trish Everett

Straight to the point

And they sang a new song … (Revelation 5:9)

These words from Revelation have the power to strike a chord with every one of us on many different levels, not least the start of a New Year with its resolutions (intact or otherwise).

The current economic recession may mark the end, perhaps, of rampant consumerism and materialism, and sound a death knell for retail therapy (my husband will be a very happy man then). But this may mean that we now have the opportunity to find new ways of spending our time that don’t involve spending lots of money, but rather spending free time with our families and friends, getting together round the kitchen table rather than going out, and producing tasty family meals cheaply (anyone for Delia’s Frugal food then?).

And here in our United Benefice at St Mary’s and St Anne’s, together we are seeking to sing a new song too as our vision process works to identify what it is we should be doing, how we can shape our buildings to meet the needs of our communities imaginatively and how we can support, sustain and grow our Church family. We don’t yet know the words of our new song, but there will be exciting and challenging times ahead as we begin to give voice to it.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
