Thought for the week by Elizabeth Leicester

Straight to the point

Feeling somewhat desperate as the bulletin deadline loomed and I had few thoughts in my head, I felt like echoing St Paul, “Lord what wilt thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6, KJV). My attention turned to verse 1, “Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter”. Is the person who hurried to Damascus, the same man as he who wrote the incomparable treatise on love in Corinthians 13? He would seem to be the embodiment of his words to the Romans, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind”.

Perhaps we also breathe out threatenings, “Just let her wait!”, and need transforming by this same Jesus. Sometimes we may not even recognise our own aggression which may be hidden by a mask of smiling compliance, and can be a factor in many symptoms and much dis-ease.

But the majority of anger distress will relate to old issues, and digging for our buried treasure can be very rewarding and liberating. Then the deeply valuable energy of our aggression can be refocused. Look at what St Paul achieved! We can stop breathing out threatenings and start breathing in Our Lord’s love and peace. And when we ask Him, “What do you want me to do?”, we can experience Christ’s same transforming power for His work.

Collect for today: Sunday 25 January 2009, Conversion of St Paul

Almighty God, who caused the light of the gospel to shine throughout the world through the preaching of your servant Saint Paul: grant that we who celebrate his wonderful conversion may follow him in bearing witness to your truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
