Thought for the week by Revd Peter Hansell

Straight to the point

Candlemas is a special celebration in the Christian year forty days after Jesus’s birth, marking the time when Jesus was dedicated to God in the Temple according to Jewish law (Luke 2:22-39). Mary dedicated baby Jesus to God, and Simeon proclaimed Jesus as the light to the nations of the world, the words sung weekly in the Nunc Dimittis at Evensong. The Church for many centuries has celebrated this day by the lighting of candles, hence the name candlemas. This day is a liturgical transition between the joys of Christmas and the coming pains of Lent and the Cross, of which today we get our first glimpses. In the same way Simeon rejoices and praises God at seeing and holding the Christ-child (v28), but adds prophetic words about Jesus’s suffering where a sword would pierce Mary’s own soul too (v35). Candlemas is therefore a time which celebrates transitory periods of our lives.

Today God has given us an opportunity to reflect upon the past, and look in hope to the future. We might want to give thanks to God for all the good experiences of the past, lay to rest painfully recurring situations, or perhaps try to rebuild, heal or move on from broken relationships. Then, we might, with God, want to glimpse into our future, ask God who he wants us to be, how he wants us to change and develop, and pray that he will strengthen us to walk the path with him as we prepare ourselves for the journey ahead that God has in store for us all.

Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)
Poverty and Homelessness Action Week

God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness: we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever
