| Tue-17-Feb | 8:00 p.m. | Prayer Circle – The Prayer of Silence. Lead by Revd Frank Berry. Piggott Room at St Mary’s. Please note the starting time. All welcome |
We are told more than once in the Bible that Jesus, during His ministry, rose early in the morning and went to a solitary place to pray. We are not told how or what He prayed, but that simple verse (Mark 1:35) shows us so strongly that if Jesus needed a solitary time with His Father, how much more we need to make such a time however busy and full our lives.
A time to still ourselves and come closer to God, who already loves trusts and forgives us beyond our comprehension. By becoming still and silent we start to shed our outer disguises, our longings to control situations and our false loves. The outer shell of our lives cracks and our minds and hearts become closer to our souls, which brings us nearer to God. As we develop more silent listening and honest outpourings to God, he will fuel a small fire to burn within us, or a murmuring stream to flow from our innermost being. This spiritual renewing is the true deep help, peace of mind and birthing of creative actions we all need to cope with everything that lies before us in our daily living and relationships, be it times of stress or joy.
Graciously look upon us, Oh Holy Spirit of God, and give us for our hallowing, thoughts that pass into prayer, that passes into love that passes into life with Thee forever.
Eric Milner-White
Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
