I have often wondered how the feast day of a martyr called Valentine came to be associated with a celebration of romantic love. We have been celebrating St Valentine’s Day on 14 February since 496 AD, although the festival was not associated with love until the fourteenth century. According to Geoffrey Chaucer, this was the day when the birds chose their mates.
St Valentine was a legendary Roman priest, martyred in the third century. Claudius II ( Marcus Aurelius Valerius Claudius), Roman Emperor between 268 and 270 AD, had earned the title Claudius Gothicus for a famous victory over the Goths and was a strong military leader. The legend of St Valentine tells that Claudius II believed that married men made poor soldiers and, in the interests of maintaining a strong Roman army, he banned marriages between younger citizens. St Valentine defied Claudius, convinced that marriage was an essential part of God’s plan for His people. He continued to conduct marriages between younger citizens in secret and was beheaded for his defiance in around 270 AD. Ironically, Claudius II died of plague in 270 AD, a disease for which St Valentine is the Patron Saint.
While his existence and life is shrouded in mystery, his story tells of an unswerving commitment to the sanctity of the sacrament of marriage. In an age when marriage is perhaps less popular than it has ever been, his feast day deserves to be heralded and celebrated.
www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=159Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things ,now and for ever.
