Light is vitally important in our lives. At the flick of a switch we have light in our homes and similarly our streets are lit, though the light pollution in cities is frightening. I have been thinking about this recently during a short visit to a rural part of Brittany. There the only street lighting is from the stars and the few car headlights. Then we see the far distant light outside the cottage which is “home”. During the day there has been sunlight on bare branches, especially on the bark of the silver birch. Catkins and the tops of hedges have shown lights that are almost orange and the local rose granite has sparkled in the sunlight. As the sun sets many vivid colours have shown through the trees.
For artists the direction from which light comes into a picture is an all important feature of the work. In Mark’s Gospel for today Jesus is transfigured by a dazzling white light, while in the Epistle, Corinthians 4:6 we read, “for God … made His light shine in our hearts … to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” The old Wayside Pulpit slogan sometimes said, “Have you seen the light?” It obviously originates from this Epistle, but gives us another way of thinking about light in our own lives. In the next few verses Paul emphasises the importance of God’s light and describes it as “this treasure in clay jars” which is with us throughout all the problems which we encounter in the course of our lives. We take the light for granted at our peril.
Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
