In both passages God’s promises to mankind are stated. Once I remember seeing a particularly beautiful rainbow whilst dodging lots of showers when walking down Moseley Road towards home. The sight of the sun scattering the dark clouds to reveal the “bow” was impressive and reassuring because it meant I might be dry for the rest of my journey. Just like the rainbow, God’s promise to the world that the earth will not be destroyed by a flood, so too I believe Jesus was given a sign that God was pleased with him, which gave him the courage to go on and continue to spread his Father’s message to the world that mankind could have another chance to change a life lived in darkness to one lived in the light of the knowledge of God’s love.
As I write the sun is shining and the lingering snow and accompanying frost has finally gone. The other day I saw snowdrops, another comforting sign that spring is coming. The early disciples had to wait without the knowledge of what happened after the ultimate darkness of Good Friday where evil would appear to have triumphed over good. I am conscious that I am beginning that spiritual journey which will not end on Good Friday. I can be reassured that on Easter Sunday God’s promise to the world through Jesus’ resurrection will be fulfilled
Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
