Thought for the week by Giles Osborne

Straight to the point

The reading of Jesus throwing out the traders in the temple reminds me that life is not led on a single plane. We say “how are you” when we meet because we know that how we and other people are feeling is the single most important thing at that particular moment. Likewise in the Church's year, seasons mirror moods. Lent has an important place, for recollection, prayer and intention. Time is not given to us, just lent, as the Khalil Gibran says in The Prophet. We are stewards who have to give account: account to ourselves for our time and actions, account for our use of leisure and account for the stewardship of our possessions. It is helpful that the Church throughout the centuries has established a rhythm of feast and fast — high jinks of Christmas and Easter, prostration of Good Friday.

Lent urges us to tweak aside the curtains, blow away the dust of petty failure to sally into the blare of spring. Nature has put on its party clothes and is cackling, hooting with exuberance just as we are tiptoeing in slippers in hand. If we could share nature's abandon and be less miserable we would be better at penance. This is in no way a dig at Lent. If Lent was not there the invitations to self examination, prayer and stewardship would be forfeit. As it is we must respond to the challenges, use the extra opportunities for prayer, meeting and thrift, and above all remember that however wonderful our actions, however blindingly we perform, that without charity all our endeavours count for nothing.

Collect for today: Sunday 15 March 2009, 3rd Sunday of Lent

0 Lord, raise up, we pray, your power and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness we are grievously hindered in running the race that is set before us, your bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever.
