Summer Term 2009

Children aged 3-11 meet on the second, third and fourth Sundays during the 10:00 a.m. service. Children’s groups recommence after the Easter break on Sunday 26 April. The leaders have decided to make some changes to the organisation of the groups for this term, to even out the numbers in the groups. The changes are as follows:

Group Change
Starfish/Crèche No change
Octopuses Preschool only (in the Piggott Room)
Sea Horses Reception, Year 1 (Rose Cottage)
Dolphins Years 2, 3, 4 (Crow’s Nest)
John Dory Years 5, 6 and above (Parish Office)

These changes will be an experiment for the summer term, and I would welcome any feedback from parents or children on the new arrangement.

Thought for the week by Hansa Shah

Straight to the point

As I read the verses from Mark’s gospel, the words, “who will roll the stone away?” kept ringing in my ears. Now, as in Jesus’ day, Palestine is under occupation. Its residents are denied the right of free passage within their territory because of barriers, check-points, the need to produce passes and identity cards, curfews and the mere whim of Israeli soldiers on patrol. I think of the dwindling and beleaguered Christian community in the West Bank and Gaza, unable to visit Jerusalem, one of the holiest places for Christians, to worship on Good Friday or meet with relatives at Easter. Well might the Palestinian Christians ask, “Who will roll the stone away?” The message of Easter is, “Christ has risen”. With Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection, salvation was given as a free gift to all peoples.

In my understanding, liberation and freedom in this world are as much a part of this good news, as is salvation in the next. According to the verses in Acts, all those who have heard this good news, are called to be partners in spreading it. We are called upon to assist in rolling away stones which serve as barriers to freedom and human dignity. I pray that at this Easter-tide, we will pledge ourselves to doing what lies in our power in rolling away stones which hinder God’s free gift from reaching our fellow sisters and brothers around the world. And A happy Easter to You All!

Collect for today: Sunday 12 April 2009, Easter Sunday

Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity.
