Thought For The Week by Peggy Langdale-Smith

Straight to the point

John 20:19-30: After The Cross

This amazing story comes after the Crucifixion when Mary Magdalene had seen Jesus herself and had spoken to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”. That evening Jesus joined them, though “the doors were locked for fear of the Jews”. He said, “Peace be with you” and showed them his hands and his side. He spoke to them, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you”, and “Receive the Holy Spirit”.

Thomas was not there, and protested when the disciples told him that they had seen the Lord. Without more proof, he said that he would not believe. Thomas had something else to discover when Jesus again came to the house and said, “Peace be with you”.

This time, hearing and seeing what Jesus said and did, Thomas’s eyes were opened to his words, “Blessed are those who have not seen, yet have come to believe”. St John ends this chapter with words for us, “So that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah the Son of God, and that through believing, you may have life in his name”.

Collect for today: Sunday 26 April 2009, 3rd Sunday of Easter

Almighty Father, who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord: give us such knowledge of his presence with us, that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life and serve you continually in righteousness and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Collect for Pandita Ramabai’s Feast Day, 30 April

O God who didst endow Thy servant Mary Ramabai with singular gifts of intellect and a wise compassionate heart; we thank Thee that Thou didst call her to bear witness to Thee by her learning, and by service to her suffering sisters of India, and pray for grace to cherish and follow her example, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen
