Thought For the Week by Vernon Batsford

Straight to the point

Peter and John were brought before the Council in what appears to have been one of the earliest acts of Christian persecution. Realising the significance of what Peter and John had done and said and being aware of their popularity, the Council felt itself powerless to punish them. However, aware of the risk of Christianity spreading further, they dismissed Peter and John with a warning not to speak in the name of Jesus again.

We now know that Peter and John didn’t heed the Council’s warning but risked everything, including their lives, to spread the Word. Christians have been persecuted from that day to this but due to the acts of countless others following the example of Peter and John, Christianity is still thriving. Fortunately for us in Moseley, the risks of speaking about our faith are minimal but many of us will have travelled to parts of the world where that is not the case.

The message of Peter and John to the Council, and also to us, seems simple enough. The lame man stands before you, cured in the name of Jesus who, incidentally, you crucified and God raised from the dead. Jesus, despised by you, is the cornerstone of the Faith and only through him is salvation to be found. In all the world there is no-one else given by God who can save us. I do sometimes wonder if we make it more difficult than it really is.

Collect for today: Sunday 3 May 2009, 4th Sunday of Easter

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
