Thought For the Week by Mary Brookstein

Straight to the point

Journeys

With the approach of the holiday season they come to mind, and often it is what happens on a journey that makes it more memorable than the journey itself. From my own experience I think of a long, long 24 hour flight through the night from Australia, and then seeing the Alps rising above cloud in the rosy glow of dawn. Wonderful! Nearer home, the first finding of a favourite picnic spot on a much travelled route.

There are many accounts of journeys in the Bible: Abraham travelling from Ur, the great epic of the exodus, Jonah’s sea journey. Stories Jesus told of the good Samaritan and prodigal son: travel involved. How many more can you recall? Remember Jesus himself was born on a journey.

I like the interesting detail in today’s epistle describing Philip’s eventful journey. For example, the traveller to whom he expounds the scriptures is not just an unidentified traveller, but a eunuch in the service of Candace. (A title held by all Queens of Ethiopia). An important man, obviously already interested in the faith. Full marks to Philip who was quick to take the opportunity to baptise his pupil. Tradition has it that the eunuch returned home to evangelize Ethiopia. Bon Voyage!

Christian Aid Week

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
