Thought For the Week by Charles Wall

Straight to the point

We have just finished collecting for Christian Aid Week, what has that meant to you? I have done what I have done every year, distributed envelopes to houses in the area at the back of Cannon Hill Park and then returned a couple of days later to knock on doors and retrieve the envelopes.

I always end my week of collecting despairing about our indifference to the suffering in places all over the world. My little world at the back of Cannon Hill Park reflects the world in general, the good, the bad and the indifferent.

Some envelopes are returned bulging with pennies saved over the previous year, some returned with nothing in at all. It’s always interesting to hear the reasons for not giving but I always take heart from the people whom I only see once a year who give so gladly and with a smile. It’s a chastening experience to be handed an envelope from a pensioner who obviously finds it hard to make ends meet, yet is prepared to give something to those who have little or nothing.

So what do I make of it all? I need to try harder to make sure that I never become complacent about my good fortune and that I never become indifferent to the seemingly overwhelming misery there is in all corners of the globe.

Our second reading today from St John offers the best advice, “love one another, just as I love you”. That’s what Christian Aid Week means to me.

Collect for today: Sunday 17 May 2009, 6th Sunday of Easter

God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
