In chapter 15 of St John’s gospel Jesus tells the disciples that the Holy Spirit will reveal to them judgement and truth. Acts of the Apostles chapter two shows the way the Holy Spirit brought them universal eloquence and St Peter says that the young men will have visions and the old men will dream dreams.
It is dreams and visions that can change the world. Looking beyond the present to a better future can be revolutionary. Martin Luther King’s dream of a world without racial discrimination was eventually realised in us. Such dreams can motivate and energise people to work for their fulfilment, and to “aim for the stars”. Without any aspirations to aim for, it is possible to sink into a state of apathy, even despair. “Where there is no vision, the people perish”, said a poet whose name I cannot remember. [Proverbs 29:18 — Ed.]
This is true at a personal and political level. If there is no clear idea of a better society in the minds of the rulers, a better society will not emerge. Similarly, on a personal level, whether it is a matter of ambition or of recovery from an accident or illness, this is true. I have been told that extremely ill people have a better chance of recovery if they hold a mental picture of themselves in excellent health than if they are swamped by negative feelings.
Visualisation can also contribute towards reconciliation where there is enmity between individuals. Jesus’s vision is, supremely, of a society where love predominates, “This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you”.
God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
