The famous Lake District walker and writer, Alfred Wainwright, mentions “the sound of wind sighing across the mountain tops”. This is similar to the words of Jesus to Nicodemus from today's Gospel. “The wind blows where it chooses, and you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit”. Today is Trinity Sunday when many of us struggle to understand the meaning of “Three in one and one in three”, which the hymn writer mentions.
I am beginning to understand it better after reading The Shack, by William P Younger. In this book three totally different people make up the Trinity. They understand each other perfectly and relate to the wider world in a quite perfect way. The problem is with the humans who don't find it easy to understand. Isn't this where we come in?
Jesus also chides Nicodemus for not understanding his teaching on the Spirit. But Jesus goes on to explain the forgiving nature of God in the lines made famous in the haunting music from Handel's Messiah, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoso believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
We are called by Jesus to believe in God the creator, and his only Son, who died for us in order that we should believe, with them, in the Holy Spirit who like them, never leaves us wherever we are or whoever we are.
Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
