I will always treasure the beautiful home communion set which you kindly gave me, an item which I am sure will play an important part in my future pastoral ministry. Thought For the Week by Elisabeth Leicester

Straight to the point

John is just the right man for the job

‘Saville Row clothes are’nt suitable nor is after shave; the dust and smell of the desert hang about him, so do the people.’ Graham Kings in Profit and Loss writes of John the Baptist, that lonely figure who straddles both testaments. Perhaps those neighbours who asked, ‘What is this child going to be?’ were on the receiving end of his uncompromising preaching about sharing shirts and food. This message, reinforced by the sheep and goats story, still echoes round us. Yet John shared our doubts: ‘Is it true?’ ‘Is Jesus seriously God?’ He sent messages to Jesus, who referred him, and us, to the witness of His works: Matthew 11. John’s courageous stand cost him his life.

‘The bad old days’ we say. ‘This doesn’t happen now.’ Doesn’t it? Read of the 876 activists including church leaders, who’ve been killed in the Philippines for standing up for what they thought right, and literature from Amnesty International makes horrifying reading. A bit remote? But Christian witness here can be costly. Perhaps the talk at work turns against Christianity, or pillories refugees. Even in benefice affairs hard questions may need to be asked. ‘Are our investments ethical?’ ‘How green are our activities?’ Graham Kings again: not, ‘You can’t change the world, that’s just the way it is!’ but, ‘Is it just, the way it is?’

Launch of Bell Project at St Mary’s

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people, that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory or your name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
