Thought For the Week by Helen McNicoll

Straight to the point

Mothers

I wonder how many times we remember their sayings, their good advice, and their meaningful reactions to situations. Many of us are blessed with this firm foundation for life, and doubly blessed when it was as a result of a knowledge, understanding, and love of God. We are inexplicably bound with our mothers, and as St Anne’s celebrate the life of St Anne today, we all give thanks that Mary must have had a very special upbringing with her mother, St Anne. She must have been close to God to be able to see beyond the obvious. This is so apparent when we read the incredible story of the Annunciation where Mary is able to understand so quickly the situation that the angel Gabriel presents, and she grasps the depth of her role in life and its connection with the work and magnitude of God. Mary heard and saw God beyond the words of Gabriel, and hopefully this is what we are doing as we pray, worship, read, and act, so that we hear God through grace, giving us a life pattern that we can try to fulfil for ourselves and with everyone we meet, and so, helping us to draw even closer to God and his everlasting love.

Collect for today: Sunday 26 July 2009, 7th Sunday after Trinity, Proper 12 St Anne’s Patronal Festival

Lord God of Israel, who bestowed such grace on Anne and Joachim that their daughter Mary grew up obedient to your word and made ready to be the mother of your Son: help us to commit ourselves in all things to your keeping and grant us the salvation you promised to your people: through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
