Since St Anne’s and St Mary’s are now officially joined together it occurs to me what I should have realised long ago, the special relationship between the two saints. On returning to attending church regularly in the 90’s I have found that I had much to learn about being a Christian and why we follow different traditions when it comes to praising God. Both St Anne’s and St Mary’s patronal festivals fall in late summer and early Autumn, almost at harvest time when we traditionally give thanks to God for our food and shelter.
As Isaiah states, ‘For as the earth bringeth forth her bud and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth.’ On reading this passage it strikes me how thankful we all should be for our wonderful world, also for God’s eternal patience and forgiveness towards us despite our neglect and destruction of much of the earth and all living things. Recently I visited an exhibition in Cambridge which commemorates Darwin and his theory of evolution. Linking it together with famous artists of the day who portrayed animals and birds that belonged to species that are no longer in existence. At the time of his discoveries and today the implication of his theory still causes controversy especially among Christians.
On the same trip I was privileged to attend a concert in Norwich cathedral in honour of Vaughan Willliams and enjoyed listening to the haunting ‘Tallis fantasia’. I believe the composer is adding through his music our thanks and praise to God. Finally, who could not be moved by the passage identified in the Authorised King James version of the bible as ‘Mary’s Song’. So I invite all readers from our benefice to join with me in echoing Mary’s words, ‘My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour’.
Almighty God, who stooped to raise fallen humanity through the child-bearing of blessed Mary: grant that we, who have seen your glory revealed in our human nature and your love made perfect in our weakness, may daily be renewed in your image and conformed to the pattern of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God, now and forever. Amen
