Taking Mark’s gospel as a whole, it seems that his emphasis is on action rather than teaching. In chapter eight he stresses how Jesus taught his disciples that the ‘Son of Man’ must suffer and be rejected and they must be prepared to tread the same path. He taught with such confident authority that people asked who he was. Some people dismissed him as mad. Others were prepared to see him as the Messiah but the Jews had long been expecting a ‘Messiah’ who would be a political leader and a figure of glory and found it hard to recognize Jesus as the Messiah because He chose the path of humble service and suffering and showed no inclination to lead them to war against Rome. For this reason many turned away from him.
This was probably why Jesus was reluctant to claim the title of Messiah openly, preferring to speak of himself cryptically as the Son of Man. In today’s Gospel, the focus then shifts, as for the first time Jesus tells His followers that he will suffer death and afterwards rise again. This is again referred to in Mark 9:31 and 10:33-34. These episodes, plus the Transfiguration, which appears to occur around the same time, are a pivotal point in the story which surely assured His disciples that he really was the Messiah, and from that time on Jesus spoke more and more of His suffering and death.
Almighty God, whose only Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence: give us pure hearts and steadfast wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever
