Thought For the Week by Peggy Langdale-Smith

Straight to the point

James 3:4 (after Hebrews); 3:13-18; 4:3,7 & 8

In his letter (James 3:4) James asks, ‘Who is wise and understanding among you?’. We should ‘show by our good life that our works are done with gentleness born of wisdom’. James tells us the essential nature of wisdom, the wisdom from above which is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. But wisely, James also points to behaviour which is not wise and understanding, which comes from cravings which are at war with us, or we covet something but cannot obtain it. We ask and do not receive, because we ask wrongly. James quotes that ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’. We are to submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to us.
