Sitting round the meal table on holiday with family members of different generations, the conversation turned to food, as it often does in my family. Are we almost overwhelmed today by the vast choices on offer? Do we manage our ‘five a day’? Did wartime rationing have a beneficial effect on the wellbeing of we older ones? Food for thought. Then we moved on to salt and the essential part it plays in our diet, even though we are worried not to overdo it.
At the end of today’s reading, St Mark puts together several sayings of Jesus which use the allegory of salt. Then, as now, salt was highly important in their lives, not only because it was vital to well being, but also to flavour food, and as a preservative. Before the days of refrigeration, meat left to itself went rotten, but pickled in salt, it retained freshness. Sometimes. as Christians, we can seem rather thin on the ground, but like salt, we can impart a better flavour to society. Also we can strive to preserve what we hold good when world weariness and corruption appear to flourish.
Please, pass the salt.
O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
