Thought For the Week by Jokhim Meikle

Straight to the point

A Thought at Harvest

Time was when families faced the yearly uncertainty of a calamitous harvest, and a bounteous harvest would bring profound rejoicing and deep thankfulness to God that they could feed themselves and survive another year.

Fortunately for most of us here at St Mary’s, fear for the harvest is no longer our immediate reality. Indeed we can be so removed from the sowing and are so taken for granted that they have reaping of our food that we can forget what it means to take daily responsibility on the land to ensure the survival of our families and our neighbours. In today’s passage from Matthew, Jesus’ warnings speak to our reality, where food and clothing become the focus for fashion and gourmet articles in the Sunday papers. From Jesus’ words we can recognise ourselves as those who worry about such inessential things, and are in danger of forgetting how it is enough to know ‘each day has enough trouble of its own.’

Considering Jesus’ message in the light of harvest time, I begin to see how distracting myself from the essentials of daily life inevitably distracts me from a deep faith in God’s promise that all will be well. When I find myself caught up in unimportant diversions, I experience the poor harvest such preoccupations produce. Then I am in as much danger of starvation as my ancestors, only it is the danger of experiencing the fear that knows it has failed to sow the seeds, and to tend the shoots of faith which lead to a harvest that will truly feed the spirit.

Collect for today: Sunday 4 October 2009, Harvest Festival
Feast of St Francis

Eternal God, you crown the year with your goodness and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season: grant that we may use them to your glory, for the relief of those in need and for our own wellbeing; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
