Thought for the week by Jan Miller

Straight to the point

How many of us feel sympathy for the rich young man who asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life? He was obviously a sincere, law-abiding Jew but felt that he was still lacking something, and that there must be something more he should be doing than just keeping the commandments as Moses had instructed. Jesus’ response was specific to this young man, ‘Go sell everything you have and give to the poor’. This would have been difficult for this particular young man as he was very wealthy. Jesus realized that for him it was a preoccupation with money that stood in the way of his salvation. This would not be the same for everyone. Christ was not suggesting that having money ‘per se’ was sinful, (though He did say that it was hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven) but that as a gift from God, money should be used in a beneficial way.

So how might this relate to us in a different age and land of plenty? Is it our wealth, our status, our house or our clothes that stand in the way of our salvation? Provided we have these and other aspects of our lives working in a true Christian perspective then we can all hope we are on the path to achieving salvation. For me the most heartening words from this passage are ‘Jesus looked at him and loved him’. Christ loves each and every one of us and if we ask Him to show us the true way, He will.

Collect for today: Sunday 11 October 2009, 18th Sunday after Trinity, Proper 23

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to that which is before, we may run the way of your commandments and win the crown of everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
