Kaleidoscope

From Sunday 1 November until the end of Epiphany, St Mary’s Church is beginning a ‘kaleidoscope’ project both following and portraying the Church’s liturgical journey in colour from All Saints to Candlemas. To mark the stages on the journey, each bay in the Church is going to be hung with symbols and colours made by our Children’s Groups. Today Angels appear to mark All Saints. Watch and wait for further signs to come. Generations have learnt from the symbolism and our pilgrimage will provide us figures and signs to reflect on. Come with us over the next two months to find Christ being with us on our journey to Bethlehem this year and beyond.

Thought for the week by Hansa Shah

Straight to the point

Revelation 21:1-6

When you read this Sunday’s homily, I will be in Jerusalem. A Jerusalem made ugly by walls at whose check points Palestinians are routinely humiliated, a Jerusalem whose old streets are filled with the wailing of families made homeless in the land of their birth. Saint John saw a vision of a new Jerusalem where God is with all his people, where there will be no death, neither sorrow nor crying.

The Palestinians living in Jerusalem too see a vision where there will be no needless deaths, where their homes are not demolished and where they will be able to live in dignity. A well known charity states, ‘we believe in life before death’. The Palestinians wait for the establishment of a new and just Jerusalem in their lifetime.

On All Saints Day we remember with gratitude saints who by their lives made society a more just and compassionate place; who stood by what they believed in what was right in the face of opposition and even death at times. Whilst we remember the saints of days gone by, let us give thanks for those who have played such a role in the world in our own lifetime. At present as never before, we need men and women of courage and conviction who will speak out with a prophetic voice and work towards creating the vision of a new Jerusalem world wide. We each have a role to play in doing so.

Collect for today: Sunday 1 November 2009, All Saints Day

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
