Gifts for Magamero, Malawi

We are hoping to send out Christmas gifts to pupils al Bishop McKenzie primary school. There are 8 years and approx 500 pupils, however pupils don’t necessarily start at 5 and finish at 13 it depends on what age they started and how quickly they progress. Consequently a small gender neutral wrapped gift would be gratefully received. Please place contributions in the back of either church by the 15th November. For further info please see flyer.

Thanks Rosemary

Operation Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Kaleidoscope

From Sunday 1 November until the end of Epiphany, St Mary’s Church is beginning a ‘kaleidoscope’ project both following and portraying the Church’s liturgical journey in colour from All Saints to Candlemas. To mark the stages on the journey, each bay in the Church is going to be hung with symbols and colours made by our Children’s Groups. Today Angels appear to mark All Saints. Watch and wait for further signs to come. Generations have learnt from the symbolism and our pilgrimage will provide us figures and signs to reflect on. Come with us over the next two months to find Christ being with us on our journey to Bethlehem this year and beyond.

Thought for the week by Elizabeth Way

Straight to the point

Remembrance is, of course, at the heart of the Communion service, where the broken bread is a symbol of the sacrifice of Christ, and we are urged to keep in mind the remembrance of it. In a wider sense, remembrance of the past is an enrichment of the present, with implications for the future. It is, of course, right to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in a cause they believed in, their courage, and the pain of those who have lost loved ones. It is also surely right to work for a world where such sacrifice is no longer called for. We remember the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Now many voices in high places are calling for the elimination of these ‘Domesday’ weapons that destroyed the two cities. Actions must follow those words. In our private lives remembrance of those close to us who have died, and of past happiness with them, gives significance to our present lives. We are strengthened by these memories. Remembrance can work in two ways: gratitude for the past and determination to work for better things in the future.

Collect for today: Sunday 8 November 2009, Remembrance

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
