Kaleidoscope

From Sunday 1 November until the end of Epiphany, St Mary’s Church is beginning a ‘kaleidoscope’ project both following and portraying the Church’s liturgical journey in colour from All Saints to Candlemas. To mark the stages on the journey, each bay in the Church is going to be hung with symbols and colours made by our Children’s Groups. Today Angels appear to mark All Saints. Watch and wait for further signs to come. Generations have learnt from the symbolism and our pilgrimage will provide us figures and signs to reflect on. Come with us over the next two months to find Christ being with us on our journey to Bethlehem this year and beyond.

Bethany Everett

Congratulations to Bethany Everett for gaining her Dean’s Chorister award from the Royal School of Church Music which was presented to her by Bishop Andrew at a special service at Birmingham Cathedral.

Thought For the Week by Pam Laslett

Straight to the point Dominus Flevit

Just ten years ago I had the good fortune to go with a group from St Mary’s to the Holy Land, and stand on the Mount of Olives where Jesus had stood. We visited the beautiful little church called Dominus Flevit, and like Him, we could see Jerusalem with its Temple spread out before us. It was a magical sight. He wept because he knew that the buildings would be destroyed. Solomon had built a great Temple for his people because they wanted to be like other great nations around them, Egypt, Persia and Greece had all built wonderful temples to their Gods yet those nations had passed away. Jesus knew that there would always be strife and war, already the Temple had been destroyed twice and Palestine is still the scene of bitter conflict today. Even worse his whole people have been dispersed. Yet the Jewish religion has survived, while those of the great Empires have faded. Strangely though, it is heartening that through the might and power of the Roman Empire, Christianity has been propagated throughout the world too. Sadly, war and strife still continue in spite of this, but perhaps we should take heart that while some glorious buildings do still survive to mark our faith, the power of the word is still mightier and God exists without our efforts. We can spread Christ’s word by so many more means today.

Collect for today: Sunday 15 November 2009, 2nd Sunday before Advent

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
