The Children’s Subcommittee met on Monday 4 January. With the PCC’s endorsement and the Diocese’s permission plans are now continuing to make the Family Worship Zones permanent. These areas will be improved and are enjoyed by many as good places for families and children to worship in. For both the safety of children and to allow the dignity of worship for all, the subcommittee have requested a gentle reminder that all children in both the family worship zones and across the church are supervised at all times, and request that children do not climb over pews or run in the building, for health and safety reasons.
The season of Epiphany has begun – ‘the time when we celebrate the revelation of God’s light made manifest in Jesus Christ.’ The Christmas Trees in the side aisles will be removed but the main ones at the front of the church will remain until Candlemas. The Kaleidoscope mobiles will also remain up until the beginning of Lent.

‘What’s the time?’
‘I have’nt got time.’
‘Where did the time go?’
There are so many clichés about time in my dictionary that they run to four columns of print. It seems that time goes very fast for older people, but more slowly for the young, especially children who frequently say, ‘When I grow up’, or ‘When I go to school, college, university’ etc. Somebody once said, ‘A week is a long time in politics.’ This must also be true of the liturgical calendar. Just two weeks ago we celebrated Christmas with all its joy and fun. Last week we rejoiced at the visit of the Wise Men to the baby Jesus. We heard about the meeting of Jesus and his parents with Simeon and also Anna. Then Luke tells of Jesus at twelve years old causing concern to his parents while he talks with the elders of the Temple. After one brief sentence we jump to today’s gospel and John the Baptist, a time span of probably eighteen years. I read recently that years not mentioned in people’s lives are happy and unremarkable. We can presume that this was the life that Jesus led in preparation for what was to come. During these years he learned wisdom and the amazing insight into the hearts of the people he met during his ministry. John recognised Jesus as the Messiah and this was confirmed when, after his baptism, a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son … with you I am well pleased.’ The quiet and uneventful times in our lives are when we learn and develop our faith and our prayer life so that God can use us as he wishes ‘when the time is ripe’.Almighty God, in the birth of your Son you have poured on us the new light of your incarnate Word, and shown us the fullness of your love: help us to walk in his light and dwell in his love that we may know the fullness of his joy; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
