Thought for the week from Jonathan Hodgson

Straight to the point

See and believe

Before Lent had started, several shops already had their Easter displays in place, with scenes of Easter eggs, newly-hatched chicks and young lambs. What does the secular world’s symbolism say to us? Many see these as merely representing ‘the promise of Springtime’, ignoring the essential Christian message of ‘new life and new hope’. Different people see the same thing differently. Today, in church, we apply our own symbolism. The horror of the ‘crown of thorns’ is replaced by the joy of ‘the empty tomb’. Do such symbols have any greater meaning than fluffy chicks and bunnies? Sceptics will ask us how ‘death has been defeated’ when we all know that we are going to have to die someday. They’ll tell us that, in itself, the empty tomb proves nothing, and they’re right. ‘In itself’, it doesn’t. But when Christians look at these events through the eyes of faith, they discover some wonderful things. We’re told that at the same time as Peter stood in that empty cave and stared around in amazement, John ‘looked and saw and believed’. Already ,for him, the ‘seeds’ of new life and hope were beginning to grow. Mary Magdalene, with tears in her eyes, looks at the grave clothes which had covered Christ’s body and, instead of two pieces of white cloth, sees two angels who say to her,.‘He is not here; He is risen!’ And now its our turn. What do you and I ‘see’ as we look around this morning?

Collect for today: Sunday 4 April 2010, Easter Sunday
Christ is Risen, Hallelujah!

Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity.
