Thought For the Week from Hansa Shah

Straight to the point

This narrative, from the Acts of the Apostles, reads like an interesting one act play, which can be transferred to our own times. There are two named characters and a group of believers from Joppa, unnamed but crucial to the plot.

There is the dead Dorcas, a woman whose life was characterised by good works, sewing endlessly to provide much needed clothing, or may be raising funds for the poor through their sale. Perhaps like people in our own day, who diligently knit, sew, bake, make soup and hold bazaars? Then, there is Peter. Not so long ago, he had denied his master and run away in fear. Now, empowered by the Holy Spirit, he was sought after. He responded to the call of the believers, and praying over the dead Dorcas, brought her back to life. How wonderful, that one who had failed so miserably, should go on to perform miracles through faith.

But the story would not have progressed at all, had it not been for the group of believers whose love for Dorcas prompted them into action. Individually, they remain nameless and unknown, but as a group, they made all the difference between life and death for Dorcas.

Where do we see ourselves today?

Christ is Risen, Hallelujah!

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
