Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code has taken the country by storm. The appeal of this book in our society today in some way relates to the cultural climate with its questions and suspicions surrounding organised religion. To many, the claims Brown portrays tap into the worldview that many ordinary folk consider more believable than their understanding of Christianity. The Forum for Mission & Evangelism in partnership with Birmingham Cathedral has organised an evening for debating issues surrounding Da Vinci on Wednesday 24 May. Dr Paula Gooder (Biblical Scholar), Fr Mike Hall (catholic Priest and Theologian) and Canon Robin Gamble (Canon Evangelist Manchester Cathedral) have agreed to take part. There will be opportunity for questions and comments. It would be an ideal opportunity to invite fringe members of the church, colleagues, family and friends who are not yet Christians.

What a simple entreaty from Jesus in the passage from John Chapter 15 verse 12 is, “My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you”. He goes on to say that the greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them! Would that it be so easy, hopefully none of us will have been put in such a position but many have, many still do, and of course Jesus was the supreme example of personal sacrifice.
So, what do I learn from this passage, do I treat everyone as I would treat my family and best friends, with love and respect? Of course, but I think it’s more fundamental than that. I feel it’s my understanding that we are all equal in God’s sight, none of us more important than the other, all helping and sharing in creating a world that we should be proud of. But it’s the obvious things that get missed, that show we care and love our fellow human beings: saying hello, a smile, opening a door for somebody, saying thank you, listening; and that’s not just to the people you know, that’s everybody!
God our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
