Revd Peter Hansell writes:

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

The Trinity is, without doubt, the most important teaching about God in the Christian tradition and is the touchstone for Christian orthodoxy. However, when we think of what the teaching of the Trinity means for our lives, we can easily feel that it is a dry, distant, academic doctrine that has no relevance to our day to day struggles. The philosopher Immanuel Kant even said that the doctrine of the Trinity has absolutely no practical relevance for anyone's lives.

Recently, though, there have been many studies from the Church which affirms the importance of the Trinity as a model for our lives. When we think of the Trinity there are three persons who live in perfect unity, a wondrous relationship of co-equality, perfectly flowing in and out of each other. There is no hierarchy, subordination or oppression in this relationship, and therefore it is like a creative, dynamic circle which reaches out to each one of us and the whole world.

We in the Church who worship the Trinity are also imbibing a perfect model for our own relationships on the world. If we are all made in the image of God, then we are made in the image of the Trinity, and as such there should be no subordination or oppression when relating to each other. Instead, we are inspired to live in peace and love in full relationality with our neighbours. The Trinity teaches us that we are a team, a community called to live and work with each other.

This is why Trinity Sunday is often chosen as a day when ordinations take place. Today, when I will be ordained, I realise more and more the importance of the model of the Trinity, as it shows that priesthood itself is a relational sacrament, where we are all called to follow God as a community, living and working together for a common purpose.

Collect for today: SEASON_NAME

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
