The first two verses of today’s reading from St Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians is a wake-up call to them to heed God’s grace and not let it go to waste. But what is the rest of it about? Why does Paul feel it is necessary to go to such lengths to describe the efforts he and his fellow disciples have made, the hardships they have suffered, how badly they have been treated and how their words have been ignored?
The reason seems to be in verse 12 where Paul accuses the Corinthians of closing their hearts to him. He speaks to them as a parent speaks to a child—see what I have suffered to bring this message to you; are you going to ignore it? Despite the apathy with which they received the message Paul is still at pains to declare his continuing love for them. Those of us who are parents may be experiencing a bit of deja vu here, but on the other hand, parents or not, we are all children of God. Perhaps we should put ourselves in the place of the Corinthians, accept that Paul is writing to us as well and take a bit more notice.
Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth: send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
