Intercessions

We remember those with birthdays this week, especially Carl McLeod, Hermione Thompson and Rosemary Berridge (9th), and William Mackie (13th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

Christine Hirsch writes:

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

I have always admired (and possibly been a little envious of) those people who appear to have the ability effortlessly to strike up interesting and easy conversation with a complete stranger. Although I seem to get by quite adequately on a day to day basis professionally, there can be times, particularly in more social situations, where the words just seems to evaporate somewhere on their way from my brain to my vocal cords with the risk of an embarrassing silence.

The latter part of this week’s reading from Mark’s gospel tells us about discipleship. The idea of being sent out in this way with no preparation would seem a huge task from a personal point of view. Whilst we may not always be able, or be ready, to put ourselves forward to part of a formal outreach or visiting team, it is possible for everyone to perform the same outreach and discipleship each time we come into church by talking to someone that we don’t know, who perhaps may be visiting our church for the first time. A friendly greeting to someone in a pew will always be welcomed.

We all too often have our list of to-do’s or to-see’s after a Sunday morning service. But perhaps we could all take a look around the church, towards the edges of the coffee crowd, around the font, behind notice boards or at the end of the queues. Is there anyone there who seems alone with no-one to talk to? Striking up conversation with strangers may be a personal challenge, but having been part of the greeting team I have managed so far. And the immediate response has always been a positive one.

May be this is one small way that we can reach out, from what may seem to a visitor to be the inside and be actively inclusive of those who may feel as though they are on the outside even within the walls of the church.

Collect for today: 4th Sunday after Trinity

0 God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
