The flowers in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s are given to celebrate the Wedding Anniversary of Elizabeth and Lynn Williams.

We remember those with birthdays this week: Robert Brown (22nd), Elinor Newcombe and Joanne Simons (23rd), Joshua Parry, Vincent Okafor and Margaret Findlay (24th), Lois Dunning (25th), Samuel Barber (26th) and Rachel Simons (27th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

This will take place at St Martins in the Bull Ring on Sat 4 Nov; if you would like to take part please speak to Rosemary Donovan.

Midweek Services

The 7:30 a.m. service of Holy Communion at St Mary’s will be moving from Friday to Thursday from November on the first and third Thursdays.

Children’s ministry at St. Anne’s

This is seeing an exciting new initiative. From Thursday 2 November we are to trial a new after-school service for primary aged children, their parents or carers. A short service of songs, prayers and activities based on the theme of light will provide opportunity for those families who find Sunday worship difficult due to other pressures, and would like an alternative time to worship together. For further info speak to Rosemary and see the promotional literature. Please pray for this venture.

Bishop David

He will be inaugurated as the ninth Bishop for Birmingham on Friday 17 November at Birmingham cathedral. This is a clergy or ticket only event. However, Bishop David is also having services of welcome for the different Deaneries. Congregations from Moseley Deanery are invited to the cathedral on Monday 21 November at 7:30 p.m. I hope that many people from our two parishes will attend and that we will continue to hold Bishop David in our prayers. For more information speak to the wardens or Rosemary as we need to send off numbers attending by Monday 6 November.

Holocaust Memorial Museum

As part of their joint project on ‘Remembering’, the youth group are going on a trip on Saturday 4 November to Beth Shalom: 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Young people £15; Adults £20; places limited so see Rosemary.

Parish Office

The Parish Office will be closed on Friday 27 October.

Children’s groups

There are no groups this Sunday at St Mary’s.

Annual Shoe Box Appeal

Today is the last opportunity to donate your gifts for children in Eastern Europe who live in poverty. Please place items in the box at the back of church. £2 is needed for transport costs for each box.

Memorial Services

On Sunday 29 October at 6:30 p.m. at St Mary’s and Sunday 5 November at 6:30 p.m. at St Anne’s. At these services we will be naming, lighting candles and praying for those who have died during the past year. If you would like someone close to you to be mentioned, please write their name on the list at the back of church.

The Theology Reflection Groups

The Wednesday group will be looking at the Synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), and the Thursday group will be exploring what the church is. The study guides are now available at the Parish Office or from Revd Peter Hansell.

Thought for the week by John McKinley

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

I enjoyed this gospel reading.  It is very relevant to many issues we face today.  We learn that we cannot ask for Christ’s love and we cannot buy it.  Christ will give His love to us.  As regards buying it we learn it may have a price we are unwilling or unable to pay.

In our consumer-laden world, do we ever ask the real price of the consumer item we buy on a whimsy and then discard and replace with another consumer item in a second whimsy?  Do we think or realise that the price we are paying we cannot afford?  The price we are paying is the destruction of our world and the lives of future generations.

God gave us this world to look after as custodians.  We did not buy it from Him to do what we like with it.  Even if we had bought it, should we destroy it with no thought of anyone but ourselves?  Giving and taking; buying and paying – we need to found the Christian Consumerism Movement. If it already exists, we ought to join it!

Collect for today: 19th Sunday after Trinity

O God, forasmuch as without you we are not able to please you; mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
