Like so many passages in the Bible, this one from Mark poses a serious challenge to our faith. So many of us like blind Bartimaeus have prayed for healing in our lives. There are those who like Bartimaeus have received healing and have emerged from their ordeal with strengthened faith. There are also those who have prayed no less fervently for healing, but it has not come to them in the manner they may have hoped it would, and are left with faith sorely shaken or completely shattered. And then there are those for whom healing has not come in the hoped for manner but are still able to pray, “Thine will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. It is my prayer that we may receive the grace to pray this prayer in the face of all the vicissitudes of our lives.
God, the giver of life, whose Holy Spirit wells up within your church: by the Spirit's gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ and make us eager to do your will, that we may share with the whole creation the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
