Thought for the Week from Charles Wall

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Today we remember all those who fought in the two World Wars of the Twentieth Century and subsequent conflicts. We especially remember those who died in order to preserve our freedom. So many of us were too young to be there but our Remembrance is helped by hearing from those who lived through those terrible times; news footage, books, history lessons. Eventually of course those who were there will be gone but the act of Remembrance needs to go on as a nagging reminder of the awfulness of war. We must never lose sight of the terrible nature of war and the misery and suffering it brings.

But do we learn? There are many in the world today who are suffering because of war in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Israel and the Congo. Why do so many have to suffer because of the inability of leaders to seek peaceful compromise? Why do so many have to suffer because of the greed and cruelty of individuals? We pray that our acts of remembrance today will spur our leaders to redouble their efforts to bring peaceful solutions to all these areas of conflict. We also pray that Jesus’s message in today’s Gospel reading is heard loud and clear by those who thrive on conflict, “The right time has come and the Kingdom of God is near. Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!”

Collect for today: 3rd Sunday before Advent

Almighty Father whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
