Thought for the Week from Jenny Allen

Christ The King

This Sunday’s theme is referred to by St John in both our readings. Revelation chapter one encourages all the new Christian communities to continue to persevere in their new found faith. Reminding them that there is no one higher than God who is ‘Alpha and Omega’ and Jesus is his Son. In John chapter 18 Pilate asks Jesus, “Art thou the King of the Jews?” Jesus replies that if he were in the human sense a Jewish King then his people would not have betrayed him. It seems to me that as human beings we are very easily impressed by ‘titles’. As a child I quickly learned that using the right form of address was considered to be extremely important. But what do ‘titles’ really mean? Is a Bishop more important than the homeless person selling the Big Issue? As a Christian I believe Jesus is my King and I try to give him my respect and listen to his words. Many years ago an evangelist, Billy Graham, came to Birmingham to preach, and I believe that through his message I heard Jesus’s call to me to make him ‘King of my Heart’, and to follow him. Ever since I have struggled to do just that.

Collect for today: Christ the King

Eternal Father whose son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the church in the unity of the spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
