Thought for the Week from Vernon Batsford

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

What a day that must have been!

Having returned to Galilee, where ‘the power of the Holy Spirit was with him’, Jesus then went on to his home town of Nazareth. He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and was invited to read from what we now know as Chapter 61 of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; He has chosen me…etc.

Like me, his congregation would probably have been under the impression that all this related to Isaiah. No doubt they were happy enough with that and the day was very much like any other Sabbath. But then, after Jesus had finished reading and handed the book back to the minister, came words that changed all that. If ever there was a day and a place in which to be a fly on the wall…

We shall probably be hearing the new version of the Bible today, This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read. I like the Authorised version where Jesus says, This day is this scripture fulfilled… “No, this isn’t about Isaiah”, he is saying, “this is about Me.”

The new version goes on to say they were all well impressed with him—a bit of an understatement I would guess. “Isn’t he the son of Joseph?” they asked. For most of them it would surely represent a life-changing moment. I wonder how the conversations went as they left, or was there just a stunned silence? And what will we be thinking?

Collect for today: Sunday 21 January 2007 Epiphany 3

Almighty God, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving presence: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
