Interfaith educational programme coming to Birmingham in February. The Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations (CJCR) in Cambridge is being funded by the Home Office to provide an educational resource in interfaith relations and citizenship. Working with the Council of Christians and Jews and the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations, CJCR has developed a Flexible Interfaith Educational Programme which is coming to Birmingham. Its aim is to enable those working in and with faith communities to gain a greater understanding of the interfaith encounter and to develop skills to value diversity and deal with difference in their work.

Thought for the Week from Jan Miller

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

Today’s reading from St Luke’s Gospel includes the words of Simeon, which we now call the Nunc Dimittis and sing every week at Evensong. What lovely comforting words they are. But I would like to know how he instantly knew that this little baby was the Messiah, “the Light to lighten the Gentiles and the Glory of your people Israel”. Simeon was considered righteous and devout and had been told by the Holy Spirit “that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ”. But there were presumably several first born sons being brought up to the Temple each day to be presented to the Lord as was required under the Law, so how did Simeon recognise so quickly that this baby was the Messiah?

Do we consciously look for that special something in the people we meet in our daily lives, or do we tend to judge people rather hastily? The Sunday papers’ approach implies that to be someone special we need to wear designer label goods, go to the most fashionable resorts for our holidays, and do the latest fad in searching for “our inner self”. Simeon recognised in Jesus immediately that this little baby was someone special. Everyone on God’s earth is someone special. Let’s go out this week and see if we can recognise that special something in everyone we meet.

Collect for today: Epiphany 4, Homelessness Sunday

God our creator, who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness: we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief, shine into the hearts of all your people and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
