Sunday 4 February 2007, 3rd Sunday before Lent

We welcome The Revd Jeremy Dussek on his first Sunday in Moseley

Intercessions:

We remember those with birthdays this week, Chloë Everett (4th), Howard Vollans and Jacob Rowley (6th), Hannah Glover and Rosemary Donovan (7th), Joyce Hodgson (8th), Kate Barker, Jem Clear and Carol McKinley (9th), Frances Walker, Kay Whitaker and Mark Kilby (10th).

The church is open every morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon, but to enable us to keep the church open in this way, we need more people to offer an hour one morning a week to be available in church. If you can help, please have a word with Jonathan Hodgson.

Gift Aid: If you are a taxpayer, please maximise your giving in the Offertory Plate by using the Gift Aid envelopes provided.

St Mary’s notices can be sent to the Parish Office at (info@stmarysmoseley.co.uk), or by phone: 0121 449 2243 (mornings) by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Voicemail messages can be left at any time. Also see http://www.stmarysmoseley.co.uk.

St Anne’s notices can be sent to Revd Rosemary Donovan at info@st-annes-moseley.org.uk, or by phone: 0121 449 1071 by Thursday. Also see http://www.st-annes-moseley.org.uk.

Loop

St Mary’s has a loop system for the hard of hearing, in the centre block of seats. Turn your hearing aid to the “T” setting.

Welcome and Thanks from Jeremy

It is good to be here! Thank you to all those of you who have already welcomed me here and for the work of the Churchwardens, Ministry Team, Musicians and all who did a splendid job to produce Friday’s excellent Licensing Service. Thank you also for the work, time and money that has been spent in transforming the Vicarage into my new home; I am a priest who enjoys giving and receiving hospitality and I hope we will soon be able to enjoy it in each other’s homes.

Communication

In the next three months I will be listening and taking stock of what is currently happening here; as we prepare to become a United Benefice with St Anne’s; this will mean my time is spent between both Churches. It is important therefore that you are aware of how to contact me.

The telephone number for the Vicarage remains 0121 449 1459, although it may be easier to contact the Parish Office on 0121 449 2243 if I am not available to answer your call. This is especially important on a Friday, which is my day off.

Good communication is vital if we are to build a strong relationship together. To enable this to happen, for the first three months on Mondays at 5:00 p.m. in St Mary’s, and Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. at St Anne’s, I have set aside a space—Time to Talk. If you are either excited or not happy with how things are at Church then come and talk. It is much better to do this than potentially receiving letters of dissatisfaction when a misunderstanding, lack of information or disagreement may have occurred. It also gives a time for us to talk and pray when we offer the issue or situation to God. If you are unable to make this time please make an appointment to see me at a mutual time. It is also important that I am informed when someone is ill, in hospital or dying. Please do let me know so that appropriate care can be provided.

Look forward

I am now looking forward to getting to know you. There will be a number of particular opportunities during several social gatherings in Lent. In addition our series Faith for our Future will be commencing on Ash Wednesday when we can extend friendship and faith—details will be available in the next week.

Finally

The greatest way we know about each other and about God, is through prayer; we meet each morning at 9:15 a.m. Please do join us and offer our exciting future to Him.

From the Diocesan Office

Interfaith educational programme coming to Birmingham in February. The Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations (CJCR) in Cambridge is being funded by the Home Office to provide an educational resource in interfaith relations and citizenship. Working with the Council of Christians and Jews and the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations, CJCR has developed a Flexible Interfaith Educational Programme which is coming to Birmingham. Its aim is to enable those working in and with faith communities to gain a greater understanding of the interfaith encounter and to develop skills to value diversity and deal with difference in their work.

St Anne’s Electoral Roll

Before the Annual Meetings on Sunday 25 March, we have to prepare a totally new roll. Anyone, whether or not they are on the present roll must apply to be included. An applicant has to be baptised, aged over 16 and either live in the parish or attend worship regularly. People who are ill or infirm but would attend if they were able can still apply. Forms can be obtained from Eric Dwyer or a church warden, and need to be returned by end of February. Any questions or problems please ask Eric Dwyer (449 1610).

Birthday List

It’s time to update our birthday list again. A copy of the current list is in each church; please check the list. If your name is on there please check the date. If it isn’t on the list why not write it in (date only not the year!) so we can send our greetings to you on your birthday?

First Aid Training

On Saturday 24 February and Saturday 10 March at St Mary’s; open to all, but specially for those working with children and young people. Please sign the form at back of either church and indicate your preferred date.

Thought for the Week from Jessamy Otway

Straight to the point
Straight to the point

In both readings today we are reminded of the complete trust that both St Peter and St Paul had in God. St Paul claims his achievements were the result of the Spirit of God working within him. In the Gospel St Peter, a fisherman, who had been out in the Sea of Galilee the previous night and had caught nothing, did not, in spite of his experienced knowledge of the lake, refuse Jesus’ command to go out fishing again. The resulting catch was an exceptionally good one.

This weekend we are starting a new phase in the life of both St Mary’s and St Anne’s parishes. Some of our well established practices may be changed or modified. These readings remind me that any such proposed changes may be due to the guidance of the Holy Spirit working among us.

Collect for today: 3rd Sunday before Lent

Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
